Today's automobile is a fine example of hard
work and dedication to make our lives easier.
Automobiles have progressed an amazing amount since the earliest
automobile in the early 1900's. Most of
us take for granted just how difficult producing an automobile is (car) and do
not realize the work and hours that go into developing one. We also take for granted how much cars help
us in our everyday lives. We use cars to
get to every place we go; whether it is work, school, or anywhere else. Most of us don't realize how difficult life
would be if we didn't have any cars. There are various systems in today's
automobile which allow it function as a single unit; all of which are vital to
the function of the automobile.
The process for developing and designing a car
is a long and complex one. The process
starts with the engineers. These
engineers are some of the most intelligent workers in the automobile
industry. They work long hard hours
using very high-tech computers and engineering programs. These computers are some of the most high
tech, powerful computers available anywhere in the world. It takes many of these engineers to produce a
car and typically each engineer has a specific job, such as the car's
frame. These engineers work
independently on their assigned tasks, but they all are aware of what the other
engineers are working on. This is
because all of the work each engineer produces must work in unison with the
work their colleagues are doing so that all the work produced functions as one;
as an automobile.
Another important factor in the production of
an automobile is safety. There are many
different safety devices on cars today which save thousands of lives each
year. The engineering
that produces
these safety devices requires many hours of development. Some of the more well known devices are air
bags and seat belts. They also test
these devices to make sure they will pass safety inspections. Some of these tests are so important to the
auto manufacturers they will
Ferro 2
even crash cars
intentionally to see if they will pass.
The engineers use very expensive crash test dummies to simulate what
happens to humans in an accident. If the
car passes the crash test the dummies have to remain intact and not have any
serious damage. Once the car passes
safety crash
tests and inspections the engineers finish the
car.
Another area in the development of automobiles
that gets much attention is the engine.
Today, engines are more powerful then ever and yet they get higher
mileage then ever before. It takes lots
of studying by engineers to make the engine as powerful and fuel efficient as
possible. Today, cars frequently have
four, six, or eight cylinders. Some cars
have only three cylinders while the more expensive ones can have ten, twelve
and sometimes more. A few cars do not
even use cylinders at all. One such car
is the Mazda RX-7. This is a sports car
that uses two rotors which are triangularly shaped and rotate within the engine
walls. This is a very efficient design
which produces good power. However,
about ninety-five percent of the cars on the road still use cylinders. To get more power out of engines, engineers
frequently use turbo and super chargers.
These operate by forcing a much more richer combination of fuel and air
into the engine. This results in a much
higher horsepower output. A good example
of the effects of turbo and super chargers is the turbo chargers on a Dodge
Stealth. Without them, the car produces
about two hundred and twenty horsepower, with the both of them it produces
about three hundred and twenty horsepower.
There are many highly technical parts within an engine, each of which
could have an entire essay written on them.
Ergonomics is also known as the comforts of the automobile. These are things like the seats, the air conditioning, the dashboard, etc. Engineers who work on the ergonomics part of
the car usually take into account what
past owners of the car have said about the interior design of the car;
complaints, compliments, etc. These
engineers work on making the car as comfortable
Ferro 3
as possible without making these too
overwhelming for the driver and passenger.
Presently, dashboard layouts are extremely well thought out pieces of
work. All instruments on the dashboard
need to be put in locations where the controls will be easy to reach and easy
to manipulate. Seats need to be
comfortable but remain comfortable no matter what position they are moved
into. Ergonomics is one of the most
difficult areas of the car to design because all the work the ergonomical
engineer produces must flow around all of the safety devices already produced
inside of the car. Another reason why it is so difficult to design is because
you never know what the person who will purchase the car will look like. Heavy or light, tall or short, etc. These engineers have to make the car work
with a wide range of people and their bodily frames. Luckily, most of today's cars come with a
whole list of options you can order with them.
You can custom order your car with all of the items you will need or get
rid of the items you have no use for or do not want.
Today's automobiles are designed more for the
family than ever before. In many cars
today, they offer options like built in child seats, cellular phones, some even
come with built in tool kits and air compressors. Engineers are currently working on producing
cars with things like built in televisions and road navigational systems. Many of these options are just experimental
and will probably never actually end up in a production car. However the ideas engineers are coming up
with now a days, are becoming more practical as time goes on. In the near future we
may even be able
to actually live in our cars. We should
not be surprised to see things like flying cars and cars which do not even run
on gasoline. Only time will tell what
will become of the automobile.
